Biography

Alexander M. Capron is a University Professor at the University of Southern California, where he occupies the Scott H. Bice Chair in Healthcare Law, Policy and Ethics at the Gould School of Law, is a Professor of Medicine and Law at the Keck School of Medicine, and co-directs the Pacific Center for Health Policy and Ethics.  An honors graduate of Swarthmore College and Yale Law School, he previously taught at Yale, Georgetown, and the University of Pennsylvania, and was Director of Ethics, Trade, Human Rights and Health Law at the World Health Organization (2002-06), and Executive Director of the President’s Commission for the Study of Ethical Problems in Medicine and Biomedical and Behavioral Research (1979-83), whose report on Defining Death proposed the Uniform Determination of Death Act.  He is a Founding Fellow of the Hastings Center, an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine, the American Law Institute, and the AAAS (Fellow) and has been President of the American Society of Law, Medicine and Ethics, President of the International Association of Bioethics, and Board Chair of Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research. He was part of the steering committee for the Istanbul Summit in 2008, which produced the Declaration of Istanbul on Organ Trafficking and Transplant Tourism; then, as a member of the executive committee of the Declaration of Istanbul Custodian Group (DICG), he helped draft the revised Declaration, which he presented on behalf of the DICG at the 2018 congress of The Transplantation Society in Madrid. He is the author or editor of 10 books and more than 400 articles.
